Did you have a sandwich today? If you’re like half of all Americans, you did. It could have been a breakfast sandwich with eggs and cheese, a turkey sandwich for lunch or a hamburger for dinner—hamburgers are considered sandwiches when tracking sandwich consumption.
On November 3 chances are millions of people will be enjoying lots of sandwiches as it is National Sandwich Day 2016. Why November 3? Because it’s John Montagu‘s birthday. He was known in the 18th century as the Earl of Sandwich, and he liked his meals to go so he didn’t miss any time for gambling. In fact, he is credited with creating what we now know as the sandwich—taking his dinner meat and putting it between two slices of bread.
While many restaurants and eateries are offering deals on sandwiches for National Sandwich Day, I wanted to focus on the free food you can get during this national food holiday. So I tracked down four places you can go on Thursday, November 3 to score a sub, grinder, hoagie, hero or a good old-fashioned combination of meat or cheese between two slices of bread.
